In Portugal, car insurance is legally required coverage, known as Mandatory Civil Liability. However, there are also several optional coverages that can be included for additional protection.
We list some of the most common basic coverages, divided into mandatory and optional:
1. Mandatory Coverage
Mandatory Civil Liability
What it covers: Bodily and property damage caused to third parties (people, vehicles, or property) when the insured is responsible for the accident.
Minimum legal limits:
€6.45 million for bodily injury.
€1.3 million for property damage (values updated periodically).
2. Optional Coverage (but often purchased as the basis for more comprehensive insurance policies)
a) Voluntary Civil Liability
Expansion of the RCO to cover amounts exceeding the legal minimums.
b) Crash, Collision, and Rollover Cover damage to your own vehicle in the event of an accident, even if the insured is at fault.
c) Theft or Robbery
Covers loss or damage caused by theft or attempted theft of the vehicle.
d) Fire, Lightning, or Explosion
Covers damage caused by fire, explosion, or electrical phenomena.
e) Isolated Glass Breakage Replacement/repair of windshields, side windows, and rear windows, without affecting the insurance bonus.
f) Natural Phenomena
Covers damage caused by storms, floods, hail, earthquakes, etc.
g) Acts of Vandalism
Protects against intentional damage by third parties.
